Balancing my Vata. Day 1. Ayurveda 101. :)

I have recently met a very experienced Ayurvedic master and herbalist who suggested that I might benefit from "balancing my Vata."  Vata is one of the body/mind types in Ayurveda, the ancient Indian healing system.  There are three body/mind types in Ayurveda: Vatta, Pita and Kapha.

- If you gain weight easily and are generally calm, slow and a bit lazy person, then you are mostly Kapha.
- If you are a go-getter who has a ton of energy, gets angry and irritated easily and feels hot most of the time, then you are mostly Pitta.
- If you are thin, cold, dry person who is very emotional, has sensitive digestion and is prone to anxiety/depression, then you are mostly Vata.

Here is a very easy and fun way to see what Ayurvedic type you are:  http://doshaquiz.chopra.com/

If you don't fall under any of these categories, then you are a more complex combination of these types.  Or you are very balanced which is great.  :)  These types are the tendencies in people and the goal of Ayurveda is to find an imbalance, if any, and fix it.  So, for example, to "balance Vata" means to do things and eat foods that counteract its tendencies.  A very hollistic individual approach.  The ultimate goal is an optimum, vibrant health, not just absense of disease.

In my nutrition school we covered Ayurveda in one of our classes and I liked it a lot.  It just made a lot of sense.  I wanted to try it and learn more about it, but we covered so many different dietary theories that I got side-tracked.  So now that I met an Ayurvedic master, I decided to experiment and see for myself.  Day 1 today and I am enjoying it a lot so far.  :)
