Back to Full-Time Job and Kicking Ass!

It is a beautiful time of the year in Santa Barbara.  We are really enjoying it.  The weather is mostly warm and we don’t get heat waves around here.  I would say quite the opposite, actually – it’s freakin’ cold sometimes!  :)

I totally surprised myself last week by swimming in the ocean which is almost always super cold in Central Cali because of the cold Alaskan current.  But I did it and it was wonderful!  Here is a pic of me all-empowered & kicking ass on the Hope Ranch beach last Saturday playing football and jumping in and out of the Pacifica.

Not sure you know, but I started a full-time legal job in June, right after my epic 3.5 week vacation to Russia and Monaco.  My hubby is immersed in school so I am the only bread-getter at the moment.  At first I was really worried about not being active or not spending as much time outdoors.  I decided it would be a great test for my acquired health habits and skills and I’m happy to report that I’m doing very well – very pleased with myself.  Funny enough, but I’m actually MORE active and sometimes even spend MORE time outdoor now that I’m full-time employed.  Isn’t it ridiculous?

But it’s all about planning.  When you know you have all day to kick around your apartment, you don’t always get much done.  But when you work from 8:30 am to 5 pm, you have much less time so you treat it like a precious resource.  You value every hour, every half-an-hour.  That’s when your time management skills return the investment.  And if you haven’t learned them already, you better do it ASAP, otherwise you’re screwed.

I learned SO MUCH about time management recently.  I also invested in an iPhone so my G-cal is always synched and I have access to it all the time.  I can also listen to my school lectures on-the-go or check my email while waiting in line.  It’s really cool.

I knew that if I want to keep my healthy lifestyle going, I need to take it seriously.  I must plan it, ask for support, and incorporate it into my schedule.  I can’t just say “well, when I have time after work…”  Because there ain’t no time after work!  Before you know it, it’s already 11pm!  So I planned my butt off and the result was quite nice:  I not only played more tennis than when I was unemployed, but also did the whole month of kickboxing and went on occasional runs with my girlfriend.  Very proud of myself.

So listen up, cookie, it’s all about determination.  If you really want to be in great shape, nothing can stop you.  Not even a full-time job.  ;)  Just remember to ask for help when you need it cuz this battle doesn’t have to be fought alone.
